And so it begins...

Updated: May 7, 2019

It's early May and training has begun for next year's Iditarod Trail Invitational. The race takes place in March, and will involve 1000 miles of sled hauling over sub-Arctic and Arctic landscapes. Training begins now, and it begins easily but in earnest. My plan for the next three months is to work on increasing speed in trail and road runs - and therefore aerobic fitness - running fairly short distances (5-km and 10-km). I am aware this might not seem much in comparison to my past standards, but the last few years have been focussed on big SUP and cycle journeys, and I feel that I am beginning from scratch.

The bulk of my training will be fast walking / hiking. Beginning with shorter duration walks of a few hours, I will build up to brisk hiking over 15 hours a day, during weekends. The race seems a long way off but I have a long way to go in training before being ready for the start line.
